There's No Place Like Home

Speaking of sparkle.... Manolo Blahnik took the inspiration for his Shiny Sequin Pump from some of the most famous sequins have ever graced the silver screen: Dorothy's ruby slippers, (which most recently sold at Christie's for a stunning $600,000....) Makes those $585 Manolo's seem like a bargain, right?

Sequined Dreams

Nothing says New Years like a splash of sequins. And this year, designers have put sequins on everything and anything... Including many things they shouldn't have... (Sequined Converse All-Stars? No thanks.) To help you wade through this trend without looking like a disco ball, I've singled out some of my favorite pieces... Pick just one to avoid sparkle overload.
Sequined necklines are one of the easiest ways to add subtle sparkle that can be worn way past New Years. So go sexy with this Marc Bouwer Sequined Blouson Dress, or go simple with a more covered up Theory Sequined Top and jeans...

Looking for something that packs a little more punch? Go all out in this LaROK Sequin Blazer. Or try Elizabeth and James' shimmery Sequin Racer Back Dress. Paired with sexy 70's accents, both scream New Years debauchery.

Already have an outfit, but need a little extra something? Try a sequined headband or a glittery purse, like this Felix Rey Kitty Sequin Clutch.

Brrrr......

Chilly temps mean lots of layers... and cozy winter accessories. But instead of hiding under that parka, get toasty in these unique mittens, scarves and hats. Neck-warmers a little to crazy for you? Go with bright colors and fun patterns to stand out in that sea of black coats.

Need to use your fingers, but hate cold hands? These cozy Convertible Cashmere Mittens have a fold over top that can be worn open and buttoned back, out of the way. And they are extra long, so you can wear them with that adorable coat with cropped sleeves that you bought earlier this fall...

Chunky hand-knit pieces are a DIY-ers dream project. Don't have the time to knit one yourself? Try this Mischa Lampert Big Bow Scarf. I love the purple-y gray color.

This cozy Cashmere Neck Warmer may seem like an odd buy, but it works just like your average scarf... only better. Layer it under a big collared wool coat to add some color or wear it half open over a deep v-neck sweater to create an interesting neckline.

Even Icons Make Mistakes....

The great Kate took a major fashion risk at the Led Zeppelin reunion concert in London by donning this furry concoction of a coat... Normally she pulls crazy with panache, but this shaggy coat (paired with her even shaggier haircut) looks unkempt, in a Chewbacca with a Cruella De Vil dye-job kind of way... Not a good combo.

Sexy strappy sandals are season-less when paired with tights. Wear these coppery-gold Pierre Hardy Python Wedges with opaque black tights for a glam 70's feel. I love the delicately knotted strap.

A slim sexy heel makes these quirky Miu Miu Chic Ruffle Pumps more then just demure. Pair them with a sheath dress or pencil skirt to add some oomph to any old office outfit.

The square toe is totally making a comeback... So jump ahead of the curve in these Pierre Hardy Foldover Platform Knee Boots.

Gift Guide: The Beauty Junkie

We all have that one friend... the girl whose makeup changes more often than her shoes, whose bathroom is so stuffed with products that one more compact might make it overflow, and whose purse has more lip glosses than one could ever need. And while you might not want to feed her addiction, nothing will make her happier than giving her what she wants this holiday season... more!

If makeup is all about packaging, then this Chocolate Croc Prestige Brush Set is a package deal... The luxe brush case houses over $300 dollars worth of brushes for only $150.

Even girls with a signature scent will love trying out these adorable little pocket sprays from Bond New York. The Perfumista's Box contains 16 of their best selling frangrances which come wrapped up like cute little candies.

Citrus-y bath products are always a hit. So pick up this festive Merry Citrus by Bliss Gift Set, and get sudsy.

For the more glamorous girlfriend, try these Juicy Couture Pacific Sea Salts... They come in an elegant crystal goblet that is sure to beautify any bathtub.

The Great Fur Debate

No matter your take on fur as fashion, you can't argue that these fab (faux and real) furs are the epitome of chic. And there are options for everyone, no matter what your take on the controversy. Like the luxe look? Go all out and buy a cropped mink jacket. Part of PETA? Try the new faux fur. It looks anything but cheap. On the fence? Buying vintage fur solves your ethical dilemma. Then take it to a tailor and get it cropped, taken in, or have it attached to an existing jacket as a collar. Look at contemporary pieces for ideas...

Graham & Spencer's glam faux fur coat will make any outfit look super-chic. Pair it with some of this fall's ladylike separates for a vintage look, or go the rock n' roll route with skinny jeans, ankle boots and a tee.

Make your outerwear work overtime with this Elizabeth and James Mercer Fox Fur Collar Coat. It's practically two coats in one... the oversized collar is detachable! (So you can just snap it off when you have a lunch date with your friend who protests for PETA....)

Pair this Shelly Steffee Fur Collar with a slinky dress for a sexy 70's look. Or keep things demure and layer it over a coat. The wide lapel goes over almost any winter jacket, and the gold chain closure will keep it in place.

Is casual more your style? This Juicy Couture Reversible Fur Lined Hoodie will keep you looking chic (and feeling warm) while lounging around the house, or running quick errands. And it also makes a fab gift. (Honestly, who is going to turn down something this cozy?)

Weekly Roundup 11/11 - 11/18

Liv Tyler Edition

  • Purple looks great on pale-faced beauties like Liv Tyler. So shop it up.
  • We all knew Sharon Stone was on the crazy side, but a stretch bodysuit? Wearing one of those things is like asking for camel-toe.
  • Rihanna sexes it up in over the knee boots. Can't handle it? Try her cute Madison Marcus coat instead...
  • Political bumper stickers may be no big deal, but would you wear your candidate on your sleeve?
  • Started holiday shopping yet? Fashion books make fab gifts... But buy something for yourself while you're at it... Wide leg jeans? A watch maybe? Can't afford it on your own? E-mail the link for my site to your sugar daddy.. (or mom, or boyfriend, whatever... They will be glad to have the suggestions.)

Gift Guide: For the Kids Who Can't Read Good...

Have a friend who spends just a little too much time reading Us Weekly? Tried and tried again to get her to trade those tabloid rags for something more substantial? Well, this gift giving season, improve her intellect by buying her one of these fab fashion books for the holidays... These coffee table books may not be Proust, but at least they don't celebrate Lindsay Lohan's once a day Starbucks trip like it's the next coming of the Beatles.
To celebrate a fabulous 40 years in the fashion business, Ralph Lauren has come out with a new book that captures his career and is filled to the brim with images of his runway shows, collections, and advertising campaigns. Looking to really splurge? Get the Deluxe Edition. For a steep 400 bucks, it comes in a crocodile embossed leather case with a nickel title plate.

So you know who designs the clothes, but do you know the style arbiters behind the scenes? The ones who ultimately declare what and more importantly, who... is in and who is out? In Stylist: The Interpreters of Fashion, you'll encounter the top stylists and learn how these savvy individuals change the way you dress...

Never made it to one of the infamous Misshapes parties? Their young downtown hipster scene made some serious headlines... (from People to Paper, Nylon and even the New York Times.) So get in on the action with this collection of fashion portraits, over 2,000 wacky and wonderful images in all.

Looking for a less serious gift idea? This adorable little Shoes: Page-A-Day Calendar has some of the most swoon-worthy kicks on its pages. Shoe fiends will love every shoe on its pages, from modern Manolos to vintage gems. And at only 10 bucks, it's an simple, easy gift for your favorite shoe-obsessed friend.

Luxe Leather

As far as outerwear goes, the leather jacket is often overlooked for more 'practical' options... But what piece of clothing is more iconic than the leather jacket? Think James Dean, the T-Birds in Grease, Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones, Joan Jett, and pretty much any 80's punk band. You might not be immortalized in the leather jacket hall of fame, but who says you can't look like you should be? So put away that peacoat and check out these luxe leather alternatives. From military-inspired bomber jackets and sexy motorcycle versions, to femme three-quarter length sleeves and sophisticated looks with waist ties, there is sure to be one for you.
I alove the dusty beige color of this Mike and Chris Lightweight Leather Jacket. The tab collar and shoulder flap give it an aviator-eque vibe. And the supple lambskin leather looks perfectly worn-in. (As a proper leather jacket should...)

If you have a soft spot for that edgy zippered look (like I do), you will love this Goldsign Astor Leather Bomber Jacket. And the fun cropped look is great if you are on the slim side... Not so much? Look for a hip length option, like this Mackage Bo Moto Jacket instead.

Those looking for a less hardware-laden option will enjoy this slouchy Vince Leather Flight Jacket. It oozes subtle sophistication with its exaggerated collar and low front pockets.

Girlie girls can totally rock the leather look in this prim and proper A Common Thread Three Quarter Sleeve Leather Jacket. Pair it with a sexy pencil skirt for work or straight leg jeans for a casual weekend look.
