Mad for Plaid

More demure than the plaids of seasons past, the new plaid is tonal, in shades of gray and brown and blue. Less complicated than Marc Jacobs grunge-inspired layers upon layers of plaids last fall, these garments are sophisticated and lady-like.

The empire-waist on this Nanette Lepore Piccolo Plaid Dress is decidedly feminine. And the fullness in the skirt is incredibly flattering for those who are larger on bottom than top. For more coverage, layer a tee underneath, like the image to the left.

Don't attempt to wear this fun and quirky 3.1 Phillip Lim Plaid Trench Dress unless you have model-esque stature. But if you crave curves, go for it... Plaid, in addition to horizontal stripes, add shape where you lack it.

Looking for something you will wear more often? The muted plaid and slight ruffle detail on this Juicy Couture Plaid Wool Coat is a nice change of pace, when every coat in your closet seems to be a black pea-coat. It's also practical enough to throw on over almost any outfit. And I love the Peter Pan Collar paired with the slightly puffed sleeves.

This Vince Plaid Jacket is a little less frilly and a lot more sophisticated. The stand collar and elbow length sleeves give it a mod silhouette. Pair it with a long-sleeved top for an of-the-moment look.
