Layer Cake

Marc Jacobs Collection Spring 2007

Perhaps taking inspiration from this past Spring's breath-taking Marc Jacobs Collection, designers have tackled the tiered dress with new fervor. No longer a mainstay on the ball-gown circuit, this trend has been revamped for the modern woman, with everything from gauzy tops and dresses to edgily arranged tees.

My knees always go weak for floaty feminine tops, and this BCBGMaxAzria Tiered Organza Top is no exception. The asymmetrical layers and deep neckline make this ethereal top incredibly flattering, even for those big-busted ladies that should usually steer clear of lots of layers.

This Madison Marcus Ruffle Tank has a sporty racer back to balance out the voluminous ruffles. So if you've got great arms and want to show them off, this is the top to do it in. Haven't been to the gym in a while? Pair it with a shrunken masculine blazer. It will lengthen your silhouette and hide those jiggly arms.

Raw-edge ruffles along the bottom of this Marc by Marc Jacobs 'Odette' Ribbed Long Sleeve Top make it the perfect layering piece. Throw it on under any number of things (tees, sweaters, vests...) and let the ruffles peek out just the slightest bit. It will make any boring old tee a hundred times more interesting.

I also love the more deconstructed look of Marc by Marc Jacobs' 'Mille Feuille' Jersey Tee. Soft pima cotton gets updated with super-low armholes and intricate seaming. Layer it over a black turtleneck to take it into fall.

Mint by Jodi Arnold remains one of my favorite brands, and she doesn't disappoint with this Georgette Tiered Dress. Sheets of silk lay flat against the body creating a slimmer silhouette, and matching Prussian blue jewel accents adorn the simple neckline.
