Trends to Keep

I know that I have been going on and on about the new fall trends: frame bags, wide-leg pants, and collegiate-inspired looks. Not to mention the color palette: gray, black, and brights (in both clothes and bags), art-inspired prints and a new refined silhouette... If I haven't convinced you to go out and buy bags upon bags of clothes, than the impending cold and barrage of new fashion magazines certainly has. But before I advise you to go blow any more of your money on new stuff, take an inventory of your closet, because there are plenty of trends from last year that will still look fresh today.

Volume

Volume is still in. It's just a little more controlled, a little more sophisticated and a lot more refined. Bubble skirts, tulip skirts, kimono sleeves, balloon sleeves, trapeze tops, giant capes and big collars are just some of the places you might find this new volume. I like it mixed with winter fabrics and fitted in the waist, like this D&G Houndstooth Jacket.

Mary Janes

These sweet shoes are still hot for fall. Try them in flats, like these Marc by Marc Jacobs Cap Toe Mary Jane, or with a heel. Remember though, the lower the strap, the longer your legs look. Also still perfect for fall? Your ballet flats. So don't toss those comfy basics.

The Fedora

This trend is still going strong. But don't even think about wearing that straw one. (You know what I'm talking about....It was oh-so-popular this summer.) Instead, look for winter fabrics and colors, like this Eugenia Kim Craig Feather Fedora.

Stripes

No longer just black and white, the new stripes are gray, and mixed fun fall colors in addition to black. Look for mod shapes like this Juicy Couture Striped Sweater Dress, or preppy staples in fall colors. Want to update the look? Try color-blocked apparel instead.

Knits

These casual staples are taking new shapes this fall. So take your chunky sweaters out of storage and cinch them in with a belt. Or try layering them over tops in contrasting colors. Want something new? Try the trapeze shapes and short sleeves that are so popular this fall. I like this See by ChloƩ Oversized Poncho Cardigan.

Metallics

Gold, silver and bronze all look amazing with the dark gray palette for fall. Just keep it simple by wearing one piece at a time, like fun heels, a great bag, or a fab dress. These Loeffler Randall Peep Toe Flats are adorable, and can be dressed up or down with ease. Still looking for more shine? Try this season's newest: sequins.

Skinny Jeans

This once-trendy item has become a closet staple. They are perfect with blousy tops and tunic length dresses that would otherwise be inappropriate. And the newer styles are cleaner looking. (That means no whiskering or muddy gray colors. They aren't flattering.) Stick with black, and deep, dark denim blues. Try ankle length, like these AG Stilt Cigarette Leg Jeans, for a newer look.
